Understanding Medicare Healthcare Insurance

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed for people aged 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with certain disabilities. It’s been helping millions of Americans cover essential healthcare costs since 1965. Here’s a clear breakdown of the different plans of Medicare.

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care, with no monthly premium for most people who have worked and paid Medicare taxes in the U.S. for10 years.  Part A Medicare is what is typically referred to as the “big stuff” like being hospitalized or needing treatment beyond your hospital stay in a skilled nursing facility.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Covers doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care services, diagnostic testing, durable medical equipment and ambulance services.  Part B is typically referred to as the “outpatient medical” care.  You can purchase part B for a monthly premium when you turn 65 and in 2024 the standard rate for an individual is $174.70, which can vary based upon household income.
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Medicare Advantage is also known as an “MA Plan” “MAPD” or “Part C” plan.  Medicare Advantage is offered by private insurance companies, covering everything in Parts A and B Medicare (without exception), plus they offer extra benefits like prescription drugs, dental, vision, and wellness programs all in one streamlined health plan. Medicare Advantage plans usually operate as HMOs or PPOs, meaning you’ll need to use doctors within the plan’s network, and you may need referrals to see specialists.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Medicare Part D coverage helps cover the cost of prescription drugs and are offered by private insurance companies. You can get Part D as a “stand alone” plan or included in a Medicare Advantage plan. Each plan has a list of covered drugs (called a formulary), and the cost of your medications will depend on the specific plan you choose and the.
  • Medigap (Medicare Supplemental Insurance)
Medi-gap supplemental insurance, offered by private insurance companies, pays for out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles and copayments that are not fully covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B).  Typically, you must have part A and B Medicare to purchase a Medi-gap plan.  Since Medigap does not cover prescription drugs, many people add a separate, stand-alone Part D plan to cover their prescription costs.

Medicare Eligibility & Qualification

You become eligible for Medicare at age 65, but people under 65 with certain disabilities or end-stage kidney disease can also qualify. If you’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, you get Part A for zero premium, if you have not paid the 10 years of Medicare taxes, you can buy part A for a monthly premium.  Part B is generally recommended to purchase at age 65 for a couple of reasons.  First there is a penalty if you do not and need to buy it later in life.  Second, to have comprehensive Medicare coverage you will need both parts A and B.  To apply for a Medicare Advantage plan or Medi-gap you must have both parts A and B together.  You can also be eligible for Medicare if you have been deemed disabled by Social Security for 24 months, regardless of your age.

What Medicare Doesn’t Cover

Medicare doesn’t cover all services. Some of the services that aren’t included are:

  • Long-term care (such as nursing home stays)
  • Most dental care
  • Vision exams for glasses
  • Hearing aids
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Massage therapy

Medicare Enrollment

You can enroll in Medicare starting three months before your 65th birthday, your Birthday month and up to three months after, this is known as your initial enrollment period. If you miss this window, you can still sign up during the general enrollment period (January 1 – March 31), though late penalties may apply.  Upon receiving your Medicare card, you are then eligible to enroll into your secondary or supplemental health plan and we hope to guide you through the process.

Let Medical Insurance Today make choosing the best Medicare plan for your needs easy and stress-free.  With our zero-cost agent service, you can avoid common issues like late penalties or insufficient coverage, and you’ll have peace of mind and confidence knowing you’ve made the best decision for your healthcare future.
